Newsletter Issue #28: One chapter closes, new ones open 🦋

Hello, hello!

I'm trying out a slightly different look for these, what do you think?

In my first newsletter, I named these emails 'Our Newsletter', because I want them to be as much about you as they are about me.
'Our Newsletter' is a space where I can share with you what I'm working on, and you're encouraged to let me know your thoughts on what you're seeing.

I am happy/relieved/excited/grateful to announce that the time has come for me to put my Finding Closeness series to rest. I'm not sure if this is a temporary or permanent conclusion to the series, but it is a conclusion nonetheless. 

With this conclusion I am setting my sights on some ideas that I've been wanting to pay more attention to.

Some of you may remember me mentioning two projects last year. As I free up my attention to focus on them now, I am excited to (re)announce them properly and also  to gradually show you all the new works that I've made within these series. 

Both series are currently untitled, so any suggestions are welcome!
 

1.

At the end of 2020 I began working on an idea which gradually turned into a series of paintings that focuses on storytelling through colour, composition, and visual motif. The idea here is to create paintings that both you and I can experience in our own way and create our own stories with. The point is very much to highlight human subjectivity in how art is perceived, and to start a further conversation through the artwork. The themes in this project, as with most of the projects I work on, are centred around exploring the relationship between humans and nature.

Below are the first two paintings in this series, created almost a year apart. Soon after I made 'Study of my golden pothos in blue', I was commissioned to create an artwork by a private client, which I will share with you in my next email.

In the later summer of 2021, I began to develop my skill in digital drawing. I started with simply reworking some older drawings, but since then these little practices have become their own collection of works.

Working again with the principles of storytelling, colour and composition, I've created a few artworks here that I am hoping to release as limited print editions and NFTs. I need to do some more research into this, so once they are actually available to make your own, I will let you know.

Below is the second of such drawings (the first became the inspiration to my handmade relief print series 'Multiple facets of the self', though I may rework it digitally at some point).

Newsletter Issue #27: Mini change on how newsletters are done! 😇

Hello, and welcome to Our Newsletter Issue #27!

It is a pleasure to have you here.

It has been decided!

It is time for me to accept that my 'weekly' newsletter series is now 'biweekly'! This means that you'll be hearing from me every TWO weeks instead of every week.

The main reason for this is that I don't always have the time to do this on a weekly basis, which sometimes causes unnecessary pressure.
As I enjoy writing to you, I don't want to taint the process with stress. So, instead of giving myself the extra pressure I’ve decided to work within my own parameters for a change!
(I suppose this is what’s called personal growth?)

Since you last read, I’ve been working on several things at the same time: commissions, an idea for a hand made print release in the next few weeks, and some new painting ideas! I'll be sharing more about each of these when the time is right!

In the meantime, my fern prints are still being exhibited in Long Island, New York! Here's a little piece in their local paper about it, if you want to have a read.

The exhibition is on until the end of the month so do make your way over if you can, and please spread the word to anyone who you think might enjoy visiting!

Newsletter Issue #26: Hi! Hope you didn't forget about me 😅

It is a pleasure to have you here.

Perhaps it's time I had a rethink about the idea that these newsletters are meant to be a weekly thing! It's been ages (again) since I've come into your inbox to say hey.

How have you been?

To be honest, I've been in a hermit cave of burn out where I haven't been painting nearly as much as I'd like to or should! These things do happen though, and while my brushes have been intimidating me a bit, I've worked on other sides of my art like sending out applications to a variety of opportunities

Which leads me to a little bit of an announcement!

Newsletter Issue #25: A little note to hopefully brighten your day 🌼

How have you been?
(I'm genuinely interested by the way, we can chat if you reply to this email).

It's been a strange couple of weeks, that have felt like months, since I last sent a newsletter out. Today, I wanted to chat a bit about the process of starting a painting.

As you may recall, I've been keeping myself busy working on some private commissions, which as always I vastly underestimated the amount of time I needed for them!
Underestimating the work required for a painting is actually something I'm amazing at.

The process of starting a painting usually involves a vague plan and direction, and a list of all the components that I need to do in it.
I look at my list and think 'Easy! I can have this done in a couple days no problem.'
 
Only to realise half way through the first item on the list that actually... each component needs several 8-10 hour days to result in something I'm satisfied with. Add to this the fact that each day I tend to add more notes to my list, and voilà: a painting that I thought would take me a week, has taken a month! 

The good thing about commissions though is that they come with a guiding deadline, leaving less space for being distracted by other ideas, which is how I end up sometimes taking months, if not years, to complete paintings. 

Today's centre-piece image is one of the prints I had made last year. Its brightness in the yellow adds an air of optimism, which we all probably need right now...

Both of these pieces have a really special place in my heart as they are some of the first experiments with my relief printing technique in oil paint. (This is the same technique I used for all the prints I did at the end of last year.)

Although I may reuse the rose design for some other ideas I have, I will never reprint it like these two pieces, so they're unique.

Newsletter Issue #23: So, who won?

Hello, and welcome to Our Newsletter Issue #23!

It is a pleasure to have you here.

As you may remember on the 24th of January I started a little giveaway competition lasting a week. Thank you to everyone that took part! 
The winner was Sax Sumeray, who received her print earlier this week.

The overall process of doing the giveaway was so much fun especially doing the draw using a spin-the-wheel simulation online, which selected a winner at random. 

Considering the positive feedback from this, I will probably be doing some more giveaways in time.

In other news, since our last newsletter I’ve been working on two private commissions, which has kept me very busy over the past couple of weeks.

Working on commissions is something I really enjoy, and I actively set time aside for projects like these each year. I find there’s something really special about working on a piece that is personal to someone else, and subsequently being trusted to bring that vision to life in a way that does it justice whilst also being true to the way I paint. 

It's a process that's actually inspiring a lot of ideas for new pieces... I'll share more on this though in due course.

Newsletter Issue #19: New year, more art! 🎨

It is a pleasure to have you here.

Happy new year!
I hope you all had a good break over the past couple of weeks.

I often find it difficult to give myself the space to have a break, but this Christmas/New Year that just passed I fully forced myself into some rest and I think it did me quite a fair bit of good.
One of the nice things about forcing myself to stop constantly doing something is that I finally had a bit of time to reflect on how the year went, and also consider more ideas for the next chapter in my art.

So, before we look ahead, click here for a little recap of some of 2021's artwork highlights from the year that just passed.

Looking ahead to 2022, there's so much I'd like to do! Already, I have several painting and project ideas in the works. Though this month I am aiming to finish the final (for now) piece in my Finding Closeness series (pictured above a small detail of the piece in progress).

I am in talks for some exhibitions and collaborations, and next week I'll also have a little announcement to share with you!

In the meantime, if you've been enjoying these newsletters I'd like to invite you to please share my newsletter to whoever you think may enjoy them!

For all these Christmas markets I have been creating handmade prints. I am calling this series of artworks Same Same, But Different to highlight the fact that even though they are prints no two are exactly the same because I am not a machine, nor am I a magician (despite what I like to tell myself).

Newsletter Issue #16: A note on inspiration 💫

Hello, and welcome to Our Newsletter Issue #16!

It is a pleasure to have you here.

We didn't meet in your inbox last week, how have you been?

Before I get to my updates, which are at the bottom of the email if you're in a hurry, I wanted to discuss the concept of inspiration, as this is a topic that has come up on several occasions recently.

The concept of inspiration is a funny one. It seems as though it is believed that all artists make things when they’re heavily inspired. I don't, and I can tell you now a lot of other artists I know don't either!

Inspiration in the sense that quickens your heart with excitement, where you can’t wait to put an idea out into the physical world happens inconsistently, often at an inconvenient time, and it is fleeting. Inspiration can be achieved though through hard work.

If I waited for inspiration to hit in order to make something I’d make one or two things a year, and those would probably remain unfinished. So instead, my method is to try and create all the time*, especially when I really don't feel like it. The mantra I've adopted is that even 5 minutes of mark making are 5 minutes more than if I had chosen to not do anything at all. And usually, these 5 minutes turn into 20, which turn into a few hours, and by that point I've done quite a lot and that's when I feel more inspired. 

I'm having a lot of these moments lately, and I'll be sharing the results with you soon! If you're in London you'll be able to see and acquire some of these results in person on the 8th of December. Info after the pics! 

*(When I say all the time, I actually mean most of the time because I'm still human, and need breaks and sleep like everyone else).

On Wednesday the 8th of December, I'll have some work available at a cute little Christmas Market that my studio space is organising. I'm working on some new relief prints for this, and because it's where my studio is you can also visit that! Timings and details tbc, as and when the organisers actually send the info out. Please reply to this email to register your interest in case I need to email separately in the last minute!

Finally, above are some images from my participation at Art Battle last week, which was exhilarating, informative, and an overall 10/10 experience that I am incredibly thankful I now have under my belt. How have you all been this past week?

I celebrated my birthday last weekend which was a lovely little break from the every day, and this week I've been working hard on preparing myself for the Art Battle (less than a week to go!).

I've also been trying to push through some issues with the painting I am currently working on, which is for now the last in my Finding Closeness series. It still has a long way to go, but I've added a progress pic below so feel free to let me know what you think!

A glimpse into my sketchbook
Preparation ideas for Art Battle London

Art Battle is a live painting competition where 12 artists are invited to create the best work they can using only acrylic paint.

Each event features three 20 minute rounds of public painting (6 painters will compete in Round 1, the remaining 6 in Round 2).

The top two painters from each round (as voted by the audience) will go into a 3rd ‘Final Round’ with a new canvas, where they will have to create another painting within 20 minutes.

In the Final Round, the audience will again vote, and a single winner will be chosen for the event, who can then advance to the next level of competition.

All work is auctioned to the highest bidder through a silent auction!

Above are two preliminary sketches I’m preparing for the actual event, as I figured it’s best to go somewhat prepared. What happens on the day, who knows! What do you think of these ideas? Be sure to let me know by replying to this email.

As another month comes to an end, it is that time in our newsletter series where I reflect on October, and look ahead to some of the exciting things happening in November!

This month I was pleased to introduce to you my new series of paintings that I have been developing since September 2020. These pieces explore storytelling, composition and how colour guides emotion, with the first piece in the series pictured below, and the second of the series pictured above.

This body of work remains untitled for now, so any suggestions or ideas are welcome! It is also not yet available on my website, as I am not ready to share it fully until I wrap my head around the series a bit further. This month I've added another 2 pieces to this collection that I will share with you soon, and have begun work on 2 more. I am curious though, what do you think of it? How do the colours make you feel, and what associations do you attach to them? Reply to this email and let's chat about it! I always love hearing your opinions.

This month I also unveiled my most recent painting 'Brothers' in my Finding Closeness series (pictured at the end of the newsletter). I posted a reel on my Instagram showing some of the making process of the piece, and you can view this here.

Looking ahead to November


A reminder that I am taking part in the first ever Art Battle London on the 18th of November at the Boston Music Room.
Here, I will be competing against another 11 artists in creating a complete painting within 20 minutes. This is a live, ticketed event where the audience votes on whose work they'd like to go through to the next round, so if you're in London please do join! You can grab your ticket here.

This coming month I hope to conclude (for now) my Finding Closeness series, as I am keen to focus on the series I've briefly discussed above, and some other projects too.

One of these other projects that I am becoming incredibly excited about is entering the NFT space! And I am doing so with an idea that I haven't seen much of yet, so there's a lot of uncharted territory for me to get through.

The idea is to make my paintings available as NFTs, with the premise that anyone that invests in the NFT version of the painting will also be receiving the physical real life painting, and vice versa. In this fast moving environment where the audience is split between those that understand and believe in the NFT landscape, and those that remain unconvinced or uninformed, this is a way to bridge the gap between the virtual and the physical, in a way that is approachable and tangible.
I'm still working out my footing for this, but I'll keep you updated as and when I make progress! In the meantime, please follow my Twitter and bookmark my OpenSea account, as this is where most of this action will take place!

Newsletter Issue #12: An Announcement for November

I am pleased to announce that I have been invited to compete in the first ever Art Battle London on the 18th of November! The event will take place at the Boston Music Room, and you are invited to attend!

Art Battle is an international painting competition with iterations across multiple cities, where 12 artists are invited to create a complete painting in 20 minutes in front of a live audience. The audience then votes on their favourite pieces and the selected artists progress further into the competition, with successful artists moving into national and international rounds. In addition, all the artwork produced during the event is available for the audience to buy through a silent auction.

I am both really excited and terrified to be taking part in this event! It is going to be an immense challenge considering my paintings normally take between 30-200+ hours, but I'm looking forward to the experience!

Above is a slightly wonky picture of my first pass at a 20 minute practice painting. I used acrylic on foam board. I'm not sure if this is the theme I will choose for the event, but it was a fun bit of practice nonetheless!

Newsletter Issue #11: The big reveal!

Firstly, thank you for being here and for reading! If you're new to these newsletters and would like to read any of the previous ones you can do so here.
Today, I'd like to show you the most recent painting in my Finding Closeness series, and also one of the biggest!

Here it is! One of the most challenging paintings I have ever painted. I suspect this is because I actually know the people I am painting, so there's a bit more pressure (from me to myself) to get it right. I started work on this piece in mid 2019, and I fully completed it in July 2021! It took over 250 hours of work in total to complete, and to put things into perspective, about 75 of those hours was spent on the striped shirt alone.

As good as it looks in a photo, this is a painting that has a lot to offer when viewed up close. The text from the phototransfer peaks through in the background, and there's some really lovely textures created by this under the paint. If you're in London, and would like to come and say hi in person in my studio let me know by replying to this email!
