Little Victories, 2021
Story & Process
Little Victories was my first commission and a huge learning curve in the best way possible because I was able to explore what it means to adjust my vision as an artist to someone else’s needs.
My client wanted this piece to immortalise a transformative experience in the south of France.
After a consultation, the client sent me a number of their favourite images from their time in France and from there I developed this composition. The shadowy figure in the centre of the piece is the client gazing out from a hammock, a photo which for them represented contemplation and relaxation. Surrounding the figure, a painted collage of French summer landscapes situating the story in the location where everything took place. The bird of paradise in the centre, a favourite bloom of the client’s and a small symbol of love, excellence and the importance of having a good perspective of life. The teal background combines the calming energy of blue with the rejuvenating energy of green, while the orange lines offer a joyful interruption; the two colours working to tie the themes of the painting together.
