Carmen, Before The World
Story & Process
Carmen, Before the World is a very different type of commission to what I ordinarily do as it is a direct recreation of a sonogram. The painting was commissioned by my client who wanted to gift something different to her friends that were expecting their first baby.
As the request was to create a recreation, and the client knew in advance the kind of size they wanted, I was able to start on this piece without having to do any preparatory sketches. In this photo, some of the text has been redacted to protect the privacy of the painting’s recipient.
Working on this piece was a very special experience as I was able to immortalise something that doesn’t last forever. Sonogram photos typically last for 5-10 years before they begin to fade and disappear. An oil painting, cared for well, can last for generations.
I feel very honoured to have been trusted with such a tender gift, and I’d love to do more of these types of commissions going forward.
